The Power of Small Towns
Where residents have the opportunity to help shape the community we call home
In a small town like Morris Plains, community involvement makes a meaningful difference. Residents, business owners, volunteers, nonprofit organizations, and local government all have opportunities to contribute ideas, share resources, and help shape our town's future.
And a thriving downtown benefits everyone.
Downtown Morris Plains (DMP) is an independent, nongovernmental, volunteer-led 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to the economic, social, and cultural enrichment of our downtown and business community.
We are a nonpartisan organization and do not endorse or oppose political candidates or parties. Our Board includes residents and local business owners with diverse perspectives and political affiliations, united by a shared commitment to Morris Plains.
Our goal in sharing this post is simple: to explain DMP's role in the community, highlight issues relevant to our mission, and encourage informed civic participation.
Why Talk About Civic Engagement Now?
With a local election approaching, we've received questions about candidates, campaigns, and Downtown Morris Plains' relationship with local government. It's a timely opportunity to share information and encourage residents to learn more about the issues affecting our community.
Our mission remains the same regardless of who holds elected office. We care about Morris Plains, and we believe a vibrant, welcoming downtown is an important part of our community's future. We look forward to continuing to work with Borough leadership, municipal staff, local businesses, residents, and community organizations to advance shared priorities.
How DMP Came to Be
For years, downtown has been a topic of interest among Morris Plains residents. People have expressed a desire for thriving businesses, inviting public spaces, a walkable downtown, and more opportunities to gather, shop, dine, and spend time in our community.
Recognizing this interest, along with the challenges facing businesses during COVID, the Borough Council established a Business Development Committee in 2022. The committee brought elected officials and residents together to explore opportunities to strengthen downtown.
After researching successful approaches in neighboring communities, including Boonton, Denville, and Morristown, the committee identified the potential benefits of an independent nonprofit that could engage volunteers, support businesses, raise private funds, and help bring community improvements to life.
In 2023, Downtown Morris Plains was born.
Our organization grew from a community priority and a collaborative effort to address it. We appreciate the elected officials, business owners, residents, and volunteers who helped bring DMP to life and who have contributed to downtown initiatives in the years since.
That spirit of collaboration remains central to our mission.
The Power of Partnership
Much of what Downtown Morris Plains hopes to accomplish depends on collaboration.
As a volunteer-led organization, we bring ideas, professional expertise, fundraising, business relationships, and community enthusiasm to the table. Through these efforts and partnerships, we've helped bring public art, downtown events, business roundtables, and other initiatives to life.
Our work is strongest when residents, businesses, nonprofits, elected officials, and municipal employees bring their different perspectives and resources together. Whether coordinating projects, navigating municipal processes, or combining public and private resources, these partnerships help turn ideas into meaningful community improvements.
By working together, we can accomplish more for the community we all care about.
Questions Worth Asking
With local elections approaching, we encourage residents to learn about the issues affecting Morris Plains, consider different perspectives, ask thoughtful questions, and participate in the democratic process.
Here are some questions particularly relevant to our downtown, local businesses, and broader community:
Economic development: What are the opportunities and challenges facing our downtown? What strategies can help support existing businesses, attract new businesses that meet community needs, and encourage a vibrant local economy?
Business-friendly policies: How can local zoning, permitting, and other policies support a welcoming environment for businesses and entrepreneurship while balancing other community priorities?
Planning and development: What is the long-term vision for Morris Plains? How will the next Master Plan reflect community priorities? How can development decisions balance economic opportunities, traffic, infrastructure, neighborhood character, and quality of life?
Traffic, parking, and pedestrian safety: What opportunities exist to improve circulation, accessibility, parking, and pedestrian safety, particularly downtown?
Downtown investment: How can we enhance streetscapes, public spaces, beautification, and community amenities? How should projects be prioritized and funded?
Public-private partnerships: What opportunities exist for collaboration among municipal government, local businesses, nonprofits, civic organizations, and residents? How can the community make the most of available expertise, funding, and volunteer resources?
Community engagement and transparency: How can residents stay informed about municipal priorities, decisions, and progress on community projects? What opportunities exist for meaningful public participation throughout the year?
These questions don't necessarily have simple answers, and reasonable people may have different perspectives on how best to address them. But they deserve thoughtful consideration, and they should remain part of the conversation beyond Election Day.
An Opportunity to Learn More
The League of Women Voters hosted a mayoral debate on October 8, covering a range of issues relevant to Morris Plains, including downtown economic development, local businesses, planning, and community priorities.
We encourage residents to watch the full debate and consider both candidates' perspectives. For convenience, DMP has also prepared an unofficial transcript of the debate. The original recording remains the authoritative source.
Don't Stop on Election Day
Civic engagement doesn't end at the ballot box. Some of the most meaningful opportunities to shape our community happen throughout the year.
Attend Borough Council and Planning Board meetings. Ask questions. Support local businesses. Volunteer. Share your expertise. Stay informed about decisions and initiatives affecting Morris Plains. Consider getting involved with organizations working to make a difference in our community.
For Downtown Morris Plains, our mission doesn't change with an election. We'll continue working to support local businesses, strengthen downtown, bring people together, and pursue opportunities to make Morris Plains an even better place to live, work, and visit.
Small towns are special because of the people who call them home. Our neighbors bring different experiences, perspectives, ideas, and priorities, and those differences can make our community stronger. We may not always agree on every issue, but an engaged, informed, and connected community is something we can all work toward.
Downtown Morris Plains is an independent, nonpartisan 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Our bylaws reinforce this independence by prohibiting candidates for Mayor or Borough Council, as well as Planning Board members, from serving on our Board. We do not endorse or oppose candidates for public office. The topics discussed in this article reflect our ongoing mission to strengthen downtown Morris Plains and support our local business community.
