What Businesses Do YOU Want to See in Morris Plains?

A thriving downtown doesn't happen by accident. It takes thought, planning, and partnership. In Morris Plains, many stakeholders have a role to play, including Borough leadership, business owners, property owners, residents, and organizations like Downtown Morris Plains (DMP). The Borough helps create the framework through planning, policies, infrastructure, and investment. Property owners and businesses make the decisions about what happens within individual storefronts. And organizations like DMP can bring stakeholders together, listen to the community, advocate for downtown, and help connect the dots.

So in December 2025 at the DMP Business Roundtable when local business owners raised questions about the future of our downtown and the types of businesses that would best complement the business mix, we saw an opportunity.

We reached out to ask a simple question: What do residents want to see in Morris Plains?

DMP teamed up with Plan Better Morris Plains this spring and find out. The response was clear and remarkably consistent.

What Businesses Made Your Morris Plains Wish Lists?

Restaurants, cafés, bars, and places to gather topped the list. In fact, 84% of respondents said they are very interested in seeing more restaurants and bars in Morris Plains.

But residents aren't simply asking for more places to eat. They're looking for reasons to spend time downtown. A coffee shop with seating. A neighborhood pub. A casual restaurant. A brewery or beer garden. A bakery. A place for families, friends, or teens to gather.

Respondents also wanted more variety, particularly independent businesses that give Morris Plains its own personality and provide options that aren't already available here. And they want a downtown that looks and feels inviting, with better storefronts, signage, landscaping, lighting, public spaces, and walkability.

Perhaps most encouragingly, residents believe Morris Plains already has many of the ingredients businesses need to succeed: a loyal community, a walkable downtown, a central location, and plenty of small-town charm. Overall, responses reflected a desire to build on what makes Morris Plains special (click here to read more about why Morris Plains is a great place for businesses).

So what’s next?

While these survey results won't determine what businesses will open in town (which involves a broader range of local stakeholders, from property owners and prospective business owners to Borough leadership and planners), they DO offer a clearer picture of what respondents want to see in our community. Resident's opinions can help prospective businesses identify a promising opportunity right here in Morris Plains. When businesses, property owners, DMP, residents, and Borough leadership share information and ideas, we can make well-informed decisions about how to support and sustain a business mix that best meets the needs of all stakeholders.

Our hope is that these public survey results can help create the conditions for the right businesses to see Morris Plains as the right place to open.

We heard you. Now let's see what we can build together.
